Default Overnight Trip 6/2 & 6/3

We set out early Sunday in hopes to finding a billfish. I ordered a Roff's report and they were showing a nice line to the Sw of the Nipple. That's where we started.

Put out a full spread around 9 at the 131 Hole and worked our way SSW. Found the rip and worked it hard. There was some scattered grass but not too bad. Picked up a few large schoolie Dolphin. The chatter from Sportfish boats around was that it was slow on the bite. Kept working S and got a big bite and boated a nice Wahoo, im thinking 50-60. After that the action kind of died.

We picked up and headed to the Rigs to see if we could get some blackfin and maybe some yellows.

A couple months ago I replaced all my electronics with Simrad NSS 12's radar and AP with all the bells and whistles. I even got the CHIRP sounder. We did a trip to the Bahamas and the sounder was messing up a little but I had thought I had it figured out. Well when we got past the steps and into 1000+ ft of water the sounder goes black and can't read bottom. I start fiddling with it and cant get it to work, I reboot, restore setting everything, this all while we are jigging for blackfin. Im mad and change tactics to try to save the afternoon and put our spread back out and trolled over to Beer Can. Never got the sounder to work. We picked up another wahoo along the way about 25 I guess, so that helped my mood. By the time we got the Beer Can still no fix on the sounder so I called the rig fishing.

We relocated to the Steps in hopes for some Sword action. Put out our baits around 9. We ate some dinner and we all kicked back with radar zones up and rested. We did not get a bite from a shark or sword all night, I could not believe it.

The next morning we pick up and start trolling back towards that good rip again. Picked up some more large schoolie dolphin. Got to the Rip and there were 3 other sportfish boats out there, but no good chatter. Worked the area for a couple hours then picked up for a run inshore for some snapper.

Got some snapper and was back at the Marina at 5.

Decent trip, got some good meat and had 2 unreal weather days on the water.

I don't have much in the way of pics, I will post when I have some.

Still sounds like a good trip either way. Thanks for posting up. What was your drift at the steps? There was a slow dead zone past 1300ft

Sounds like a good trip even with the sounder issues. Do you know how many miles you covered on this journey? I'm about to make this same trip out of Destin soon and am trying to estimate my fuel consumption. Thanks!

Man you sure covered a lot of ground / water! Days like this just make the billfish sweeter! Glad you were able to get out and take advantage of the weather!

We fished an area where in the past has been good. We were in about 1000ft and drifting around 1mph. Probably 6 miles north of Petronious.

I would say we covered about 250 miles. I did not pull the numbers off my GPS. It's 111 to Petronious, we pretty much were on a straight line course with that rig then ran to beer can and back.

Sounds like a great time on the water. Put some good meat on board, had good weather, sorry about the sounder (that sucks); but all in all I think a great trip. Going to try something similar with friends, on a charter in July. Can hardly wait.

Its a lot of fun out there. I think the sounder problem is an easy fix, just a setting somewhere I have not looked.
