How does this navigation work when outside of cell range - i.e.way off Destin where you do not have rigs to provide cell coverage? I did not think that Iphones had GPS, but rather used some sort of triangulation of cell towers for pinpointing your location.

Thanks...

Howdy,

That's what is so cool - the iPhone has a satellite GPS system imbedded in it that works outside of cell range. You will be able to load the sea temp, water color, altimetry, and surface currents imagery while you are on the dock (in cell range) then go navigate on them offshore. Once the charts are loaded into your phone you don't need cell service any further.

On another note, iNavX, which is an approved app on iTunes, just added Navionics charts...so, for $49, you get hundreds of NOAA charts in addition to a plethora of Navionics charts. That's a great value, not to mention the safety factor in having a full-bore navigation system in your shirt pocket as a backup in case your electronics go down.

All the best,

Tom Hilton

Only the 3G model iPhone has GPS, the original one does not. Also, I've found that when I get outside of cell range, my iPhone battery dies extremely quickly b/c it's constantly searching for a new signal. I guess it's probably recommended to have a 12v plug on your boat so you can keep the iPhone plugged in.
