Default FloraBama Tournament 2nd place Mahi

Fished the FloraBama fishing rodeo this past weekend and had a great time. Fishing was difficult but here's the report.

We left the pass around 4 and headed out to that push of blue water near the spur hoping to find a solid rip. Little bumpy on the way out and had to dodge a few storms. Once out there found a ton of grass and a few broken up lines. We got about a mile into blue water and put out the trolling spread. All the rods were set and not 5 minutes later I look up and see a dorsal fin right next to the bird on our shotgun bait. Wasn't two seconds until I see the small billfish windshield wiping the bait. Dropped the reel in free spool and the fish bit. I thought for sure we were going to be hooked up but as soon as I put the reel back in gear and reeled I pulled the hook straight out of it's mouth. I don't know if it was unlucky that it didn't stick or I didn't let it eat long enough. Put the spread back out and headed for the grass patches. Trolling was literally IMPOSSIBLE. As soon as one bait was set there was grass on it. Trolled on for an hour or two but got tired of taking grass of the baits so we tried something else. We found the biggest grass patches we could and threw some live and dead bait at them. Pulled a few chicken dolphin off of them but didn't see much, we also had about 6 porpoises circling us so we thought for sure there wasn't going to be anything. We started to back out and move on when a big bull dolphin came flying out from under the patch and took our bait. The fight was on. The bull was tailwalking across the water and would go under the grass and come out the other side. My friend on the rod did a great job keeping the fish on as we also had about 50 pounds of grass on the line. 10 minutes later I sunk the gaff into the fish and threw him on the deck. Biggest dolphin I've put on our boat, we knew we had a contender in the tournament. Tried a few more grass patches but decided to head in and try to catch a few snappers. Caught a quick 3 man limit and went in to weigh in our fish.

Mahi ended up being 31.24 pounds! Good enough for second place. We had a great time. The tournament was awesome and extremely well put together. Prizes were also excellent. If you haven't done the Florabama fishing rodeo I highly recommend doing it next year!
