Default first rig trip on the Big E

Left Orange Beach on Friday at 4pm headed to Ram Powell on new Everglades 350cc. Had good info they were biting there Friday am, and we had equally good info re Marlin.

Arrived at RP at 7pm and put out trolling spread, first pass nice hook up with reel screaming. After a 2 minute fight comes unhooked. We had 3 first timers chomping at the bit. Caught some junk trolling(small bft and sharks) but nothing to speak of. Start jigging around 9pm and catch sharks, sharks and few bft heads that the sharks left us. Tried chunking but the sharks stopped that.

Around 12am with basically nothing to show we ease over to the Marlin. It was dead, not even marking them deep. At least we were seeing fish at RP so we ease back over there.

Around 3am, keep in mind we've been jigging sharks all night, the bft bite finally starts happening and were able to fill the box and save the trip. Lady D was there with us and they had same issues. Marking lots of fish 200-300' but no takers. Around 7am we start trolling and hooked a small mahi. That was it.

Made the decision to hop out to Horn Mtn since were 12m away "just so we'd know". It was dead and marking nothing. Caught a barracuda and pointed north for the long ride home.

Decided to check on few snapper spots and filled 5 limits of triggers on flat calm seas. It got pretty snotty the last 2miles into OB, few miles offshore was absolutely perfect.

Great time with great friends, they enjoyed their first offshore experience, just couldn't put them on any yft. All the deep rigs were in very pretty water.

That's how it all begins, every trip is a learning experience. As you go more often the number of YFT will go up same with the marlin bites.

Good luck

It was a little tough out there this past weekend. I think a lot of it had to due with the fact that word got out last weekend there were some fish down there and it got beat up for a week. We had a good trip but really had to work at them. No where was really hot, and no one technique was the ticket. We picked at them, getting one here, 3 there. Trolling, chunking, jigging. And sharks were bad in the ghetto, which made chunking almost impossible. Not as bad south of there. The fishing was hard, and you had to take advantage of the little rallies when they did decide to bite. Daylight bite was tough, we only caught 2 in the daylight; and really it was graylight. A lot of blackfins got eaten for us, and even a couple YF's lost their tails. Lady D did catch 2 YF right before daylight at RP Sat morning. We were beside them on both Saturday morning and Sunday morning. Anytime I'm tuna fishing beside them I figure it isn't a horrible place to be, cause they can catch them.
