Default 2018 MBGFC Junior Angler Report

Got some time to write a report about our trip for the Junior Angler trip this past weekend.

Left the pass around 8 Friday night and headed towards Delta House. Conditions were great, seas were calm and the wind was minimal. Arrived at delta house around 1:30am and immediately started jigging. Lots of action on the surface/sonar. First drift caught a nice blackfin. We stayed there all night chunking and jigging. Ended up with 10 bft, biggest at 23 pounds. We hooked a nice tuna on the chunk but chaffed off after the first run.

Once the sun started to come up, we got ready for the early morning bite. Nice tunas were busting on top and things were looking good. As soon as we started to put the baits out, a big storm popped up and chased us away. We ended up heading North to the drillship Rowan Resolute. Put out the baits and started to troll around the rig. Immediately caught some small dolphin, ended up with 4 but lost at least 3. As we were trolling another boat hooked up on a whitey but lost it almost as quickly as they hooked it. We headed over to that area where they had just hooked up, and bam, right long gets crushed and theres the white marlin tail walking across the water. It only jumped a few times then fought down and dirty. After 10 minutes into the fight we pull the hook. Hook bent. So we set lines back out and continued to troll. The bite slowed down and 4 more boats showed up so we decided to pick up and head over to horn mountain. Not much going on but we caught another dolphin there. Pulled lines and headed towards next rig.

From Horn we headed North to Ocean Blackhornet, drillship a few miles south of Marlin. Made a pass and immediately hooked up. Wahoo in the boat. 12.8lbs. We had to pick up lines and head in because of storms and all our ice had melted at that point.

Water was real clean everywhere we went and was cobalt towards marlin. Great trip out, ended up with 3rd place wahoo and a lot of meat.

Tight lines

Cobalt blue near the Marlin? Good to hear...the charts weren't showing that, or at least for what you could read on the charts with so much cloud cover..

Great report. Thanks for posting. Heading out next weekend. Looks like maybe a current adjustment and hoping for some cleaner water closer than independence hub
