Default 10/16 rig report

We left on a 14hr charter Saturday night at 12 with a crew of four in hopes of some yellowfin action. We arrived at the marlin around 3:00am and started jigging and chunking. Action was slow but we still picked away at the blackfins. It was starting to get daylight so I started getting everything ready for our morning setup when one of the customers pulls up a tiny blackie. I thought we should bridle him up and bumptroll him while we finished preparing. I took one of the chunking rigs (80lb flouro) and bridled this little guy up and sent him back. Soon as I did, I thought "MAN I WISH I WOULD HAVE PUT HIM ON SOMETHING BIGGER". Well, not two minutes later the drag started screaming, we let her eat and started the fight. Fish was hooked but it started swimming high away from the boat. Ofcourse I thought it was a shark until the bill broke the water. It was a rat blue that gave a small show before the angler jerks the hook and still bridled bait out of her mouth. I grab the rod and try to get her back interested, she was and followed it all the way back to the side of the boat before she grabbed it again. She was close enough to tag when she took it!! It was awesome having her swim and eat right beside the boat!!! Well, I let her eat and when I came tight she jumped and the leader broke. It was extremely chaffed. Big let down but it was only around 7:30 so we decide to put out a trolling spread and go for another. Second pass the starboard rigger (naked ballyhoo) goes off and I set the hook on a good fish. I hand the rod off and the angler goes to work. I'm thinking it is a stud hoo because of the way it was ripping drag. After about ten minutes he starts geting some control and the line is coming in. Then she jumps, at least a 250lb blue! We,ll he and his friends freak out and somehow he manages to pull the drag lever to free-spool. NO GOOD, but the deckhand fixes it before the fish runs and all is saved. We calm him down and the fight continues. The fish puts on a great show for the next twenty or so miuntes and then it happens. He somehow manages to free-spool the reel again??? It is in a horrible birdsnest this time. I tell my deckie to start hand lining me some slack so I can work on it. I am slowly gaining ground on the mess when she runs and pops the leader. Talk about a cluster!!! Both fish ate at the same rig within 30 minutes of each other, it was pretty cool to say the least. We trolled to and around two other rigs with only blackfin and barracuda to show for it before heading back in sloppy seas. Water was super blue and looked fishy, wish we could've stayed longer.

Man, that's too bad. I had the opposite problem last week we had a really good bite and my angler wanted to slow her down, I thought it was a nice YFT. He pins it and the leader pops.

That great that you raised 2 blues though.

Capt. Edward some trips things just don't seem to work out. Sounds like a nice show.

How do ya hit free spool twice? That sucks.

wow wow wow! Soo hate to hear that, but I bet your charter still had a blast!!! why was he messing with the drag in the first place? was it an accident or was he actually trying to adjust?

It was just a bad, bad thing. He was freaking out and trying to reel with both hands I think. The guys had been drinking since the Auburn game and hadn't slowed down. Plus it was the anglers first billfish, maybe first fish?? It just wasn't meant to be I guess. It was definitely the chance of a lifetime here in the gulf.
