Default Today was fantastic!

We left the dock at 5:30 and headed SW. Me, my son, a friend and his daughter. We were hesitant because of the radar and the ominous dark cloud to our West and to our East. Seeing a narrow stretch of "clear", we decided to give it a shot. As soon as we hit the spot @8 miles out I dropped and immediately hooked up. The rain then started and fish number 2 was on. We caught our limit of 8, pulled the Riptide, and headed North. The time was 7:05. I was kind of bummed because my friend is from Illinois and I felt like I cheated him out of a trip. We hung out at the pass playing with bait and then decided to head SE towards some natural bottom. I'm sure glad we did. We boated 2 nice kings, lost 2 nice kings at the boat, released a 32" cobia, caught a shark, caught trigger, rubies and mingo, and best of all...when the chunking brought the fish up, Josh did a little free diving and shot 3 black snapper. One was a stud. We headed back in when the bait ran out. What a great day. I have to say this kid is a fishing fanatic. It makes me happy.

Is a Black Snapper and a Cubera Snapper the same fish??

Its color is typically greyish red, but it can change color from bright red to copper red. It has a dark stripe running across its eye if observed from the top when it is under water. This species can reach a length of 89 cm (35 in), though most do not exceed 40 cm (16 in). The greatest recorded weight for this species is 20 kg (44 lb).[2]
The mangrove snapper can be confused with the Cubera snapper or black snapper, Lutjanus cyanopterus. Mangrove snapper are typically much smaller than Cubera, but when they are of similar size, the two species can only be distinguished by examining the tooth patch on the inside roof of the mouth

I've always called them Black Snapper as well.

Looks a lot like a Cubera. The article above clarifies it. Gray or Mangrove Snapper.

I'm still gonna call them Black Snapper though.

Nice work! We went today, brought 7 home. No studs this trip, but all solid snapper.
