There is no such thing as a "white snapper" though charter boats often all white porgy white snapper to make their clients feel good.

The OPs fish is a red porgy, Pargus pargus.

Interestingly the species is listed as endangered on IUCNs Red List. I have no idea why though.

If we are really unlucky that may be one of the few fish that recreational anglers will be able to keep in 10 years. All the rest we'll have to buy at Joe Patti or get on a charter boat.
