Default Trolling with Downrigger

How far back should a bait be from the downrigger ball? I am looking to target Kings on Sunday and just bought a downrigger to assist in this endevour. I am using a pancake weight currently. I see alot of the SKA boys using just the downrigger ball. Is there a reason why they utilize the ball instead of the pancake weight.

The ball tends to stay deeper when needed. I used to put the bait about 20 to 30 feet behind the ball.

I use the ball because that is what I bought. 20 -30 feet is what I do, just down to where I see the fish marking.

I fish 30-50' back, the main thing is to use a length that will not tangle with your other lines after it has released from the downrigger clip. I use the Cannon Ball with an aft fin as it reduces blow back. I drop the downrigger most often 15-25' and to marking fish. Good luck, they can be very productive.

Also alot of ska tournament boats use mono for their downriggers to eliminate the humm of braided wire, and makes it easier for them to cut the downrigger line in the event a hooked fish is coming towards one of the downrigger lines.
