I have never thought of trying for triggerfish, but I think now I want to try. Where are they, what do you use for them for bait, and do you drop or drift?

Thanks,

Sedge

P.S. Can you keep them right now?

In state waters you can. They are as shallow as 50' and the easiest way to catch them is with small hooks and squid. I prefer a dropper rig with multiple wire hooks, they will occasionally break the hooks but I think the hookup ratio with wire hooks is worth it. 14" fork and you will usually catch 10 under to find one over on public numbers.

Couple of small hooks on a drop rig with squid. And no you can't keep them right now. They closed the season early

EDIT: State waters are open as bigrick mentioned above. This is from the FWC webiste

The recreational harvest of gray triggerfish in Gulf of Mexico federal waters will close June 11. This date was set by NOAA Fisheries Service, who determined the the 2012 recreational quota for triggerfish would be caught by then. The federal season will reopen Jan. 1, 2013. The recreational harvest of gray triggerfish in state waters remains open. Vessels that have a valid federal for-hire license for Gulf of Mexico reef fish must adhere to this federal closure even when fishing in state waters.

Where in state waters could I catch them? Will they be at almost any public reef or wreck like red snapper are?

any structure and generally open bottom areas.
as said above, you'll have to pick through the multiple undersized to get a keeper.
