Default Smoker King location question

I don't typically keep Kings so I'm looking for some info on where the smokers like to hang out. I fish out of Destin and I'm just looking to catch a personal best. Right now that's a little under 25 lbs. I was thinking about trying the Timberholes but that's a long run just to try. Any suggestions would be great

Thanks

John

John I usually just hang a left out the pass and head towards San Destin, Never made it that far without a bite. Two weeks ago they were further offshore, I usually find them about 600 to 800 yds offshore but they were about two miles off. I use an irredescent duster rig with a froze cigar and tear them up.

I was out there a few weeks ago also. All we caught was snake kings. I'm looking for a true smoker. Have you caught them out there?

John

Sabiki some hardtails or threadfins or even some ladyfish or spanish and slow troll them on stinger rigs. Bump in and out of gear just enough to keep them up top and behind the boat. Go east down to seaside or even grayton. Just off of the beach will be fine although there's a lot of hard bottom that way that holds them as well. There were a bunch of 30-50 pounders right on the bar @ Shell Island today. I saw them and some tarpon while running a dolphin tour.

Yes they are there. If you dont do good at a certain distance offshore move out further, and continue till you find them.

Better for the smoker kings in the spring and fall.

Fish big hardtails with 2 stingers on ledges in 100~150. Timberholes are a good place. Have caught a few over 40 in that area. Bigger the bait the better. Just make sure you have a stinger on the far back. Kings kill in 2 bites, generally the will bite off the tail to immobilize the bait then come back for the rest so a stinger is important.

John,

Timberholes is a good a place as any and even a little beyond that you have the old cutoff Chevron rig. Just make sure you keep some of those snakes you catch so we can use them for pitch baits come 4th of July Weekend.
