Default Need a little advice please

OK. Have just taken up fishing again after relocating here from New England. Went out to the Liberty Ship today about 07:00 and fish all over the fishfinder. The guy beside me reeled in at least 3 Red Snapper in the first hour. I have been told to use Cigar Minnows or Squid with a circle hook. I am fishing the bottom with my weight about 2-3 feet off of my hook. Any higher than that, and the only thing I am reeling in are the Remora. Can anyone lend a suggestion or word of advice?
Thanks in advance,

Kevin

I use a live bait rig (carolina rig, knocker rig, sow rig... all the same thing to me) with 7' of leader (using mono now and not noticing a change in the bite from fluro). Don't fish the bottom for the bigger fish. Those will be up in the water column.

If you're going out of Pensacola, you need to be catching live bait IMO. We'd do it and couldn't keep them alive, but have remedied that. Frozen cigs and squid work fine, but live cigs work better as do bonito strips. Catching bait is pretty easy inside and out of the pass. Just look for big schools on the surface or check around the buoys, and use a #6 or #8 sabiki rig. You can also use a pinfish trap if you have a spot to put it, but we don't worry with that because we've always been able to get live bait there, and now I'll spend an hour or more doing it if needed. We still carry frozen bait too, but never hope to be using it.

If you're marking tons of fish, I'd drop the bait down half way for snapper, and lower it if I don't get a bite after a while. They'll come get your bait.
