Default king fish

Can they still be caught and what is a great bait to catch them with?

....unless you want to make a run to the rigs. as long as there is bait and the water temp stays decent, kings will hang around all year. they can be very territorial. but, it would take running to the rigs. keep in mind, we just had the SKA nationals 3 weeks ago and lots of kings were caught at the rigs.

Itsstarting to get pretty cold outside! I was at the shelf thanksgiving and we tore them up but the water was like 69.. Once its gets cold out there, all we usually catch is wahoo during the winter!

There are still some around the rigs and natural bottom spots in 200ft. A buddy of mine caught several of them a couple days ago out at the yellow gravel.I've caught kings in 66 degree water before so there still should be some around the warmer areas offshore

patrick, i see you have asked a couple of questions about fishing the gulf this time of year--dolphin and kingfish. you are wishing on spring and summer before winter even gets here!

if you really want to fish in the big water over the cold months, think amberjack, grouper and tuna (mostly blackfin). unless you are willing to make long runs west, and then you are only adding a few kingfish opportunities, and perhaps a yellowfin trip, if you are so inclined (and so rigged).

other opportunities exist closer to the pass--bonito are not a glamor species, but will get your winter fish fever cleared up. for larger species, the bull red run has gotten nothing but better every year.

hopefully this little info will turn your sights on more attainable winter targets.

cheers.
