One of my former students catches these off the coast in CA and calls them "yellowtails" I assume he means tuna, but I thought it looked a lot like an amberjack. So what is it?

Yellowtail are in the same genus as Amberjack and are pretty much their pelagic counterpart. There are a few different stocks of them, including some in the South Atlantic off South America. The Yellowtail found near New Zealand are the biggest, reaching well over 100lbs.
