Seen a lot of reports of folks catching mahi close to shore latley. Within 5 miles or so. Is it normal for mahi to be that close in? How close in do they normally get to shore?

Find birds and weeds and flotsam. There was a big 4x8 piece of wood floating about a mile offshore last week. Ppl were catching dolphin off of it. Nature of the beast. I wish I had been there!

Caught 13 of them today on some floating weeds or whatever only 3 miles offshore on our way out. Never seen or caught them before so it was exciting!

What did you catch the mahi on? And was this out of Pens or Perdido Pass?

ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. Throw sone small cut bait off the boat to keep them happy and grab your fly rod for a lot of fun.

We caught them on cut up bonito. Just threw some in the water and then one with a hook. They ate it up no problem. After you hook the first you leave it in the water to keep the school there and throw another baited hook in and catch another then leave that one in the water and cooler the first and just keep cycling them always leaving one in the water until you caught the whole school or until you got enough. There were probably over 50 so after we got like 13 we decided that was enough and headed out to our spot. We went to the Massachusetts to get bait and headed out and ran into the grass and little past the Massachusetts.

I have caught them just inside the pass on the eastern side. There is usually a place where the weeds will get caught in a whirlpool there. I was fishing for bait and picked up chickens instead. Caught about 5.

Had no idea they came in that close. Always hear about dolphin on the blue water forum. Hope we can find some this weekend. Do you just fillet them like you would any other fish?

Yeah but in my opinion next time we wont keep any smaller than like 20 or so inches because we only got a little meat from the smaller ones. Thin fillets with lots of bones so the bigger ones were better or more worth it.
