Default Destin Charter 6 or 8 hours

A little background before asking the question: The family is headed to Destin for our annual trip week of September 9th. This year we are going to step things up and will be chartering a boat for eight people instead of just fishing from a pontoon boat when going out to Shell Island and Crab Island. We will range in age from 8 years old up to 65 years old. Fishing skills range about as greatly as the ages do; ranging from nothing (my wife) to very skilled. I am the only one who has ever really fished saltwater (thanks to ten years in the USMC) so for everyone else it will be a new experience (save for the minor fishing I mentioned above). The main focus is for the children to really hook up and have a good time. The second objective will be getting the father-in-law to admit that there are fish other than largemouth bass worth catching. I really want to do mostly bottom fishing as back home in Missouri we do a lot of cat fishing. Everyone going is in decent shape but I have no idea what anyone's seal legs will be like. So the main question is:

When chartering out of Destin harbor to go bottom fishing is it necessary to go for 8 hours or will a 6 hour trip be sufficient? (Don't need any trophy's)

Also, with red snapper closed do private charter boats even go bottom fishing?

Any other suggestions would be helpful.

Thank you for your help.

Not sure when your going, but it looks like snapper will be open Oct 1st for around 20 days. Bottom fishing for Amberjack, Grouper and smaller reef fish like Beeliners(vermillion snapper) and White Snapper will be open. You will catch fish in 6 hours, but 8hrs will be better. With a crew that's not been out on the Gulf or with limited experience, a 6 hour may prove to be your best bet. Have a great trip!!!
