im about to line my torium 20 and was wondering if i should use 65 pound braid or 80 pound braid ?? and is backing necessary ?

65# is plenty use a full length of mono just to cover the spool and then add braid, Don't lock down the drag on that reel either. The anti reverse will fail. Also remember friends don't let friends use power pro.

Hunter I would not recommend any thing over 50# and that is pushing the 20. And 50 # will help you in the long run keeping striaight down on the bottom and also helping you with the current. That way it will help you control the bigger fish next to rocks and so on. I would also use lots of mono backing that way it will help keep you gear ratio high and that's what you want on a high speed reel. Gene

Mono backing isn't necessary if you're filling with braid. Wrap the spool in duct or carpet tape before you spool to give something for the braid to hold on to. Like Gene said 50# is plenty for a torium 20 but if you'd like to go heavier 65# will be fine but 80# is overkill. Power pro is fine as well as some other brands but sufix is my least favorite. As far as the anti-reverse failing, some older toriums had this problem and I had seen it firsthand as well, but for the most part has been corrected so I would say tighten it as much as you'd. I have yet to have a newer one returned to me since the problem was addressed.

Let me say this I had a new Torium and blew it up 3 times in 5 trips. Do Not Lock Down Your Drag. It will not hold over 15# of drag without you paying the price of loosing a good fish and the anti reverse to boot along with your knuckles when you go to subdue your handle that is flying in reverse. Now if you don't want to take my word then I can give you some links to some jigging forums that a bunch of people have had the exact same problems and a reel repair guru who will tell you the exact same thing that I am saying. It happens so much that they gave me a brand new reel last August to replace mine with.
