Default Bonita Question

I apologize for being a newb... But my girlfriend caught this Bonita and we sent it back to swim another day. After reading a bunch of report I realized this could have made good bait????

What do you do with them?

If you fish in the fall, winter and spring while the water is too cold to catch live bait it is incredible for bait. It works well all year but awesome when live bait can't be had.

You can chunk them or cut the belly into strips for trolling.

I like to eat fish. When I catch a Bonita, I hang it over the side, cut it so it will bleed out, then filet and put on ice. I like them smoked, grilled or baked.

Agreed, GREAT cut bait for ANYTHING that swims. Small pieces hooked through the skin for Triggers, Large pieces hooked through the skin for everything else. Whole when slow trolled for billfish, but that'll be your next boat.

Once dead, lay them on their side. for small baits, do a criss cross pattern through the skin to the bone about 1/2 inch square. Then filet them. For bigger baits, simply filet then cut in strips. Some people use the thin belly meat cut in strips and hook them on lures for mahi, wahoo, and billfish to add a "scent" without causing the lure to spin. That'll work, but the meat goes away fairly quickly. So replace it often.

If nothing else, GREAT chum.

Never tried them for food. "Fishy" I am told.
