Default Shark Tagging Info

Lots of good posts lately about some really nice sharks being caught in the surf. I just shared this link with Todd since he seems to be hammering them all the time. The link will take you to the Apex Predator Program home page, its a great way for them to track shark populations and see where they head. If you tag one and they recover it they'll let you know and where it was recoverd so you can see how far it traveled and how long it was out there since you caught it. I've been tagging sharks that I caught since the mid 90's and it's pretty easy to do. If you're a shark fisherman ("I'm talking about workin for a livin', I'M TALKIN ABOUT SHARKIN'!") it's an easy way to help figure out how best to take care of the fish we love catching. Check out the website and if you're interested, send them an email and they'll hook you up with the start-up gear. I can't imagine how many we could tag if everyone on this site started tagging them! Good luck and tight lines!

Thanks, I gave em a holler. Wish I had known about this when I got here. I am only here 2 more months but will continue with it once I get back to VA.

update: heard back, said they would send me the stuff with three tags. So, I sent a reply of "that would last me a couple hours".

yeah and you get 5 back after you use the 3. they don;t send more than 5. i stopped tagging black tips because they get eaten so frequently and just tag bulls, tigers and any other species that is larger or protected.

They'll give you more if you explain to them why you need more. When I started on the tagging thing I was working on charter boat, they used to send us bags of 30 at a time, but then again that was years ago. Last batch I got was 15 and I haven't tagged any in a while. Things might have changed since then. I never knew that about blacktips, thanks for the tip!

yes its legal to keep as long as they are a legal species. you can cut the tag off or just email the info. if its a NOAA tag it will be a clear case with a yellow tag in it that has all the info. if its the gulf shores research ones they have all the info printed on the outside. if you release the shark note the sex, species, tip to tail length, tip to fork length and any injuries and check the tag to see if the body is rejecting it or if its fuzed well.
also include where it was caught.
i sent one on its way with a tag yesterday. i need to get more.
