Default Oba 8/21

My wife's niece is over from Italy and she loves to fish, so we hit the beach today to try and find thing for her to catch. I spent most of the time watching kiddos and helping her, but managed to get a few casts in. I threw out 4 times and ended up with a total of 6 hardheads. I was wading out and throwing way out. My wife, her niece and my father in law were all fishing in the first trough. They caught maybe 2 catfish between them all. I threw back a couple of undersized pompano and countless whiting and ground mullet, we kept about 8 or 9 to fry up. Around 4:30 or so, my father in law hooks into a nice mid slot red. Throw him in the cooler and he turns right around and pulls in another. I take the hook out and toss him in and turn around to find him hooked up again. Caught everything on peeled shrimp.

That's my favorite surf bait, peeled shrimp. Just a thumbnail size piece on a surf rig w/ a #2 hook & 1 or 2 oz. pyramid weight. It catches fish a lot of times.

y'all got enough for a good supper w/ some cheese grits & hush puppies. Something your wife's niece probably hasn't ever ate.

I'll just add today's report here, since only fished for a couple hours. Left the 12' rod at home and took the light spinner. Managed to pull some undersized pomps and a couple whiting out with a Connor jig. Told my wife's niece about how to find a pomp hole and she took off down the beach with some peeled shrimp. Came back and had 1 whiting and a release on a small pomp. Once again, all the action was 15 yards off the beach.

I've been watching rays, dolphin and the occasional tarpon sky, but today I saw, what I presume to be a spinner, come about 6 feet out of the water. Pretty dang cool.
