Default Looking for Theories...

Recently had half a sting-ray out past the second sandbar on one of my big-fish rigs. Had a hookup, one of the biggest runs I've seen from the beach, then the dreaded slack. After reeling in 400 yards of line, saw that only 18" remained of my original 10', 400# fluorocarbon leader. Looked like it was bitten off. Was very rough that day, only thing I can figure is that the bait was somehow wrapped around the leader at that spot and he bit through. Any other ideas?

I seriously doubt 400# line was tail whipped... I suspect after said shark ambushed the bait, the leader doubled up for the business chomp.

my buddy Don had the same thing happen with the 400b above it. i've landed 8ft tigers and bulls and no chaffing problems. could have been wrapped like you said or it rubbed on somebodies private reef/ crab pot etc.

Well I have had it happen with 300 so it is possible. He said he was looking for theories so I was just throwing that out there...

I have seen that sometimes there are smaller sharks in the chase of the bait. the smaller sharks are biting at anything in the water and somehow find the leader and/or swivels. Had it happen twice in the last week. One sharks picks up the bait, swims off and the competition factor kicks in and a group of smaller sharks just start to bit at everything moving like the swivels..... That's my theory at least. the tail whip and doubled up leader has happened as well....

another theory ( was just down loading a video from last night ) and I see the bait has moved up the line, in this instance all the way to the wind on leader and the remoras are trying to get it off, so another shark could have simply bitten through your line while the bait was ridden up the leader....
