Headed down to the beach with the neighbor around 4:30 pm (old Crystal Beach Pier), put out 3 lines.
June grass was in already but still fishable, just made it aggravating. First hit was the biggest ray I have got, maybe 3'-4' wingtip to wingtip. He was just dead weight to pull in, lost him at the beach, but that was ok, did not want to fool with him.
Got 2 pompano,15" and 20". All caught in the dark water between the first and second sandbar on fresh shrimp from Sexton's. I usually cut my shrimp in 2 pieces but today put a whole shrimp on each hook. After I hooked it, peeled some of the shell off. Not sure if that made a difference or not. Had one cutoff with something big.
Another guy fishing said he had had some good luck with the pompano at the jetties.
