Default Shark leader question

I'm thinking about switching to a 300-500lbs mono leader that I can wind onto my 60W and then using a shorter bite leader. I've been going with about 6' of 360lb 7 strand Malin and 10' of weed eater line. After looking at prices on big mono, I thought I would get that and use this FG knot to tie 20' of the monon to my mainline on my SSV85000 which is 85# braid and then doing a 3-5' bite leader. This way I could more easily cast the bait and reel up further to land a fish. On my conventional reel, a 6/0W I use 50lb mono. Would this knot work for that? Of course there isn't really as much as a need since I don't really cast that rod.

The FG works fine on mono but is a pain to tie in the field. I've had it slip on hard Fluorocarbon, might be a good idea to melt a small mushroom on the end of the mono.

Always melt the tag end on all leaders. Leave 1/4” sticking out. By doing this you can tell if your knot is slipping and the melted end will stop it from slipping anymore.

All of my blue water trolling lures are rigged this way using mono or fluorocarbon leaders. I can take a quick look to see if any slippage has occurred. The extra 1/4” sticking out doesn’t cause a problem with these lures. Using that knot on a spinning reel would catch on the guides.

Is there a place to buy smaller spools of big leader? Will it degrade like the smaller stuff will?

I'm only down there a week a year. I know $20 for 100 yards isn't much, but I've only got 3 rods that I shark fish with and I can't see me needing more than 15 to 20 yards a year of this stuff. I don't see any point in getting that much if 1/2 of it will degrade before I ever use it.
