Default Needing tips on specs

Looking for a good spot to shore fish for specs. Hell, reds would be nice too. Taken a buddy of mine with me, he's never done much SW fishing, only fresh. Need a good spot with high chances, cause I know as soon as he hits something he's going to be hooked. Someone told me to try where the old boyscout peir use to be. My dads had alotta luck out there with his castnet, plenty of mullet, but are there specs...reds? And please don't recommend the gulf pier...

get on google earth find some bay coast line around where you live and look for shallow water (tan sand) with patches of black/green (grass) and try to find it near a channel (deep water access) that is the kind of stuff that reds/specs etc. are drawn too. If it looks fishy chances are there are fish there.
