Default casting inquiry

How far do you need to get your rod out there to catch fish besides cat fish.

I hooked something about 30' off shore one day that peeled a bunch of line off until it just came off the hook
And I've read you can catch pompano in very shallow water as well, but I don't waste my time fishin anything less than waist deep usually

get it as far as you can but don't surprised when something nails your bait as you're reeling in and the baits at your feet

I usually fish 3 rds.
1 large rod with 30lb braid and 40lb leader cast about 75-100 yards out
1 med rod with 15lb line and 10or 20lb dropper rig cast just inside or outside 1st sandbar
1 med rod with 15lb line and 10 or 20lb dropper fished in the trough where the receding wave and incoming wave crash. Usually 5 or 10 feet out. I've caught 10lb drum in that trough. I've seen people catch decent reds in there too.
