I am trying to get into surf fishing in Pensacola and I wanted to know what kind of fish you can catch and what kind of gear you need for catching different species of fish. Thanks for your time

90% of the time it will be hardhead catfish (trash and painfull poison spines) and whiting (yummy). You will seasonally get into pompano (april-may) Spanish mackerel (spring-summer) bluefish, blue runners, black drum, redfish, and lotsa sharks.

Equipment: Reel of your choice (I prefer spinning) an 8ft or longer rod, a beach cart, a sandflea rake, a cooler, a chair, and a beverage.

Unless fishing for big reds or sharks, I use a about 15lb mono or braid line with a hand tied dropper rig.

Dropper rig is made from 10lb fluorocarbon leader with a barrel swivel at top, and a snap swivel at the bottom. I tie in a dropper loop or two. I lightly spay paint the swivels a light sand tan color weeks in advance. That way they don't "smell" like paint. If it is a single hook dropper, I make it about 2 feet long. A double dropper will be about 3ft long. typical gulf coast surf will need a 2 or 3oz pyramid sinker on the snap swivel at the bottom. Heavier surf = more weight.

Is there normally a lot of action or is it pretty slow.
