Default 1st Time Surf Fishing Santa Rosa Beach

My family will be staying at Santa Rosa Beach this Thursday through Sunday. I've enjoyed surf fishing on the gulf coast the last couple years, and I'm really looking forward to it again this year.

This will be our first time in Santa Rosa Beach. I'm hoping to snag some Pompano. Caught two of those last year and they were delicious. Also had fun catching baby sharks, a catfish, ladyfish & a ray. Would like some good eating though if possible. I know the water temp has to be pretty hot still, so I'm planning to use dead bait. I'll have two rods with my PVC spikes. Last year I used pyramid sinkers with a couple hooks up the line.

We are staying in the Greenwood Neighborhood. I'm not sure if we will use the walk-to beach access there or drive up the road a bit to one with parking. What can I expect fishing wise in this area? Should I wade out and try to cast over the sandbar, then come back and set my rod, or will I be able to fish on the beach side of the bar? I'm going to spool my reels with 20 lb. mono. Best to use dead shrimp, cigar minnows or to try and catch sand fleas? Best time of day? I plan to go out at sunlight each morning & fish throughout the day while we hang at the beach.

Any tips/advice is appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

If you can find a hole you can cast right from the beach. I've caught fish right in the wash. I do like walking to the bar and casting bigger baits and casting spoons from the bar. I've torn up the trout, ladyfish, croakers, and hardtails from there. If you want to kayak you'll have a little more opportunity. Look at Gogokayaks.com they aren't too far from you, have good prices and will deliver and pick up for free. Go out 50-100 yards and you can get spanish makeral and other bigger fish. They kayaks are a hoot to play in the surf with too.

Right on & thanks for the reply. I'm planning to just stick to surf fishing without a kayak. Save money & can still be with my girls. That does sound like crazy fun though. Wish I could take my little Jon boat haha. It's a Coleman Crawdad that I use for freshwater fishing where I live in Alabama.

What all have you caught in between the shore and the bar?

Do you guys use stringers or a cooler to keep your catch? Trying to minimize gear I need to haul.
