Wlof Bay report 8/22

Well got to the boat launch at 3:30 a.m. this morning. Weather was questionable but no lightning so off we went. Got to my spot and started throwing mirrolures. Man am I a believer since hearing about them at Outcast with Flats Class guys. THANKS TO OUTCAST AND THE FLATS CLASS GUYS!!:bowdown I was wearing them out w/ a mirromullet and pro-cure shrimp. This trip I brought along help to run the trolling motor and help net the fishwhen I catch something big. It wasn't long before I put him to work. First fish caught was a 24" bull red. Top fish.:takephoto

This is the same spot as last trip where I caught a 25 1/2" and broke off one other time, surprising that one dock in the bay holds so many fish. The red had been caught by someone else but he got away from them. He still had a spotted speck rig in his mouth with about 18" of line hangin out. My buddy hooked up on one just before I caught this one and got broke off. There goes an $8 lure. So he ties on another and apparently missed a loop while tying it on because when he went to cast it kept flying, another $8.:dohWell after getting set back up on the light wham, here comes a good speck, 18". Middle fish.

This is the biggest I've caught this year in this area without running closer to the Perdido Pass. We fished this spot a while longer catching quite a few more smaller specks and reds. Well I did anyway, it seemed my friend couldn't manage to hook up on anything which was funny because I am at this point puttin a whoopin on him.He is cryin the blues.:reallycryingApparently he thinks its the lures I'm using but they're the same ones I use all the time and CATCH FISH.:withstupid Its almost sunrise so we go to the sunrise spot. Barbers marina. I've heard people talking about good sized specks being pulled from this area but until now have not caught any myself. Seems today I have found the sweet spot. A 19" speck on the topwater mirrolure. Bottom fish in pic above. Shortly after that I catch another a little over 16" top fish in pic above.

Topwater baits are so fun! Anyway, I hook up on a few more but I think what happened was I pulled the hooks through their mouths. About halfway to the boat they just came off.:hoppingmad The line never slacked. DO ANY OF YOU HAVE THIS HAPPEN TO YOU? It sure is frustrating but whatcha gonna do. Fish on!!After catching a few more small specks here we decide to head upIngrams Bayou to give it a whirl. There were fish there but they were mostly small and the bigger ones couldn't aim. They would stike at my topwater but miss it. That happened several times.:banghead Ohyeah my friend has yet to put a fish in the boat. It seems in the bayou all the fish were near grassbeds on the bank. Not the darker colored sawgrass but the bright green grass growing up to about 2' deep. JUST AN F.Y.I.!!That stuff was holding fish, seems every clump there was a fish in it. We came up to an old barge thats grounded there and finally my partner gets his first fish in the boat. It was a mango snapper I believe.

Can anyone give me a definate I.D.on this one and maybe legal size. He was 11 1/2" and had mean lookin teeth almost like a speck. We kept him because he ate his rapala so deep it really tore him up getting the hooks out. I hate to throw dead fish back, I mean I would rather eat him than waste it. But I'm not sure what exactly he was and the size limit. Its the first one I've seen and caught. Well that was about it. It was 9:00a.m. when we got back to the launch. Oh, thank goodness for bimini tops cause we did catch a few rain showers right before sun up. ENJOY THIS PICS< HOPE SOMEONE CAN HELP I.D. THE SMALL FISH. Anyone who says you can't catch fish on a neap tide check this out.

Til Next Time,

Jon (sunnh2o)
