Default From the Water to the Table-Specks 5/26

Finally after all the hub-bub of the weekend died down I got to get out and do some fishing. I started outon some grass flats around big lagoon and was going to drift across them until I found the fish. Well, first cast...bam...18" trout and instead of getting the anchor ready to slip in the water so I could mark the spot where I found the fish, I got antsy and started fishing with the anchor deep in the hold. After spending 5 minutes getting a deeply embeddded hook out and putting one fish into the cooler, I tried to no avail to find the spot where I was periously when I caught the fish. The wind was blowing pretty hard and I had drifted a good 50 - 75 yards and could never find my previous spot. Agitated, I contined to drift for about 20 mins with no success. I was over sand and knew that nothing productive was going to happen. The highlight of this period occured when I was bending over to re-bait my hook and heard a loud "slam." My rod crashed down into the boat and I turned around to see a damn ladyfish flopping around in the boat. In my life I have had one mullett jump into my boat but this was the first ladyfish that had ever launched an aerial attack on me. I guess it was pissed I had caught a million of its brothers and sisters in the past and cursed them.

After arguing with myself if I should move a bit or continue to fish and driftthe same area, I decided to move to another area of the flats and the decision paid off. 6 trout and 4 catfish (worthless) were caught in the next 45 minutes. I kept 5 specks for dinner and threw back the last two.

The bite turned off about 6:30 so I hit a few more spots and caught 1 red (19"), 1 more ladyfish, and 1 more stupid catfish. I filted the specks and ate them tonight. Attached is the procession from the cooler to the table.

These are the unluckly casulaties from this afternoon right before they go under the knife.

Filets ready to go on the Grill.

Dinner getting ready.

The Finished Product

Glad summer is here. Hope yall enjoyed the post.
