Default Fishing 3-15-08

Started the morning around 6:15, got the boat ready, filled up the livewell with the pinfish from the trap and headed toward the dirt ramp at Herron Bayou. I had asked about this area earlier and I figured with the fog, wind and possible shower or two, it wasa great day to try it out. Finally got launched around 7am, ran up the bayou a little and then dropped the trolling motor.

Had my 9 year old nephew with me. I tried everything. He used the pinfish the whole time either under a cork or on a slip rig. I started with a X-rap and eventually useda gold sprite, Gulp mullet on jig head and exude natural shrimp on a jighead. I even freelined some pinfish. Finally got a nice 18" trout right at the mouth of the bayou on the gold spoon, but other than that...nothing. We ran out into Perdido Bay with plans of going up to the next bayou north...Bayou Marcus I think?? but the fog was still thick and the weather looked a little gloomy. Not to mention an engine problem that's been nagging me for a while now....and is still nagging me.

So, we just fished our way back into Herron Bayou and back to the ramp. Went and had some lunch at Hub Stacey's (Mmmmmmm!), got to the house and cleaned the boat up and the one trout. I live off the ICW behind the Oyster Bar and have a dock on the canal. My nephew was bound and determined to catch some fish, so he set to the dock with some frozen shrimp I had and a slip rig. I was determined to shower.

Well, while I'm in the shower, I hear him running in "Hall, Hall...look what I got." It was a pretty nice sized croaker. I told him I'd clean it up and add it to the trout for dinner. So I shower up and go down to clean the croaker. He comes running back up to the house again. "I got a redfish!" Ok, let's measure, nope a little short go put him back...and back he goes. Then I hear, "A flounder, you want a flounder?" How big, bring it here, yep that's a keeper...he's getting added to dinner.

I told him that was all I wanted, didn't need anymore for dinner. Then, of course, 5 minutes later. "Got another flounder, sure you don't want it?" Alright, bring it here, lets measure, oh yeah, not gonna turn down some good eatin flounder.

Then, not 5 minutes later. "Another redfish!" Nope, too small throw him back. Whooo, finally he hasn't caught anything for a minute and I'm finishing up cleaning the two flounder. Had to make him stop fishing so I wouldn't have to clean anymore fish!! Time to go to the grocery store to get some grub to go with the fish.

So, aftera really slow morning out on the boat, my nephew came back to the dock and knocked em dead in 30 minutes with a nice croaker, two redfish and two flounder.

Next time I guess I'll just save the gas and setup for fishing off the dock!! :letsdrink

Happy Saturday!
