Default Dale's BirthDAYS!!

On one's birthday, one of thenicest gifts is getting to do the things you love the most, and it was a true pleasure for Team Bad Fish tospend not one but TWO days of fishing withDale (aka "On The Rocks", aka "Mrs. Ultralite")to celebrate!

Saturday we watched the weather closely, and Mike and I got the bait, boat and rods ready, and launched at Galvez in the early afternoon. We picked up the Ultralites at the Famous Dock and with a cooler full of lunch and celebratory beverages, and smiles all around, we were off!

A toast to Dale, Pirate style!!

Nosing out of the Pass, we found conditions excellent for shooting out into the Gulf a bit. We anchored over one of Mike's spots to the west of the Pass and within 5 miles of the beach. The bottom machine marked up a good many fish and we put the light tackle down.

The snapper were happy to eat live shrimp!

Light spinning tacke is a blast to catch these guys. We put one heavy setup down in hopes of something hefty taking the hook, but most of all we enjoyed the laughter and fun of putting a few on ice.

Count on Dale to catch something cool! Here she is with a Lane snapper:

Ultralite sees color- "keep that rod tip up, son!"oke

Dale does what she loves:

And puts another on ice:

We got into some triggerfish too, though most were in that annoying 11-inch range:banghead..... but we did bring in a keeper, and also one gray snapper.

For those curious about the red tide off the beach- none of us got the "cough", but we did see a few floaters go by- mostly longspine porgies and a few sea robins... me being the nerd that I am I had to net a couple up between bitesjust to check them out.....

On the way in we also saw a large red snapper floating off in the distance.

We took it easy coming in so that we could watch what Nature had painted for us:

No green flash this evening, but what a beauty of a sunset! It was very, as Mike put it, "URRRRRRRNGE!"

After we picked up the boat, we went to Fisherman's Corner and had an AWESOME dinner as only the Corner knows how to do- Tim's Spicy Oysters, spicy shrimp, mullet, softshell crab....... YUM!:hungry

Sunday- Team Bad Fish gets ready for another day of celebrating with Dale. Winds were a little stiffer than they had been the afternoon before, so we opted for a bay day.

At the first spot, leave it to Dale to find keeper bay red snapper!

Thisflounder tookmy live pinfish (hard to say who has the toothier grin!):

The current at that spot picked up and made it tough to fish, so we headed further into the bay a bit for a second spot. We weren't let down as the bigger guys started to bite- I got hammered and rocked (ended up having to break it off...:reallycrying)- Dale got hammered, drag singing, and broken off........BUT finally Ultralite brought one to the boat- his first bay Gag Grouper!

A fine birthday dinner for the Ultralites! The big guys let off, but there were a few small ones that were ambitious enough to eat the pinfish we offered:

Here is one I'd never seen before in the bay- Mike shows off a real beauty:

Juvie red grouper are one of the prettiest fishes, I think.

The bite shut down after a bit, and we moved on to one more spot, where Dale added a flattie to the fishbox:

And Ultralite found the bandit of the bay......

We had a few unusual fishes come boatside too- as Mike finds a striped burrfish likes live shrimp too!

Cute little guys........

Watching the skies, we saw cloud bands coming in and the wind began to pick up, and so did we. Back to the dock as the skies grew darker, though we made a couple of "discoveries" on the way through Grand Lagoon......

More evidences of red tide just west of Sherman Cove and extending westward for about a half mile or so- many hundreds of menhaden with a few mullet in the mix:

Dale and I being the science nerds, of course we had to check it out. Not too far away, we saw a bulging structure floating and we couldn't help but think "what else did the red tide get to?" Upon approach we saw it was actually a boat overturned- a Hobie.

Thinking we were about to have to pull someone from the water, we circled it slowly, checked the beach, and just as we were about to call in the boat's registration another boat pulled up with the passengers of the Hobie- all safe, thank goodness- they'd dug the bow under the waves and snapped their boat in half under the strain of the water. Thank goodness they'd had life vests on and no one was hurt. Situation under control- Team Bad Fish headed to the dock, pulled the boat out of the water, and made it to Hub Stacey's for a great birthday lunch just as the wind began to really howl and sheets of water poured over Perdido Key.

Dale- HAPPY BIRTHDAY :letsparty:letsparty:letsparty to my dear friend, confidante, Pirate Sister.... love you to pieces girl!!!! It was wonderful spending the weekend out on the boat in celebration of one of the coolest ladies I know.

Here are the dock pictures of what will surely be some fine meals for Team Bad Fish:

Our Gulf day Saturday- 7 red snapper, 1 lane snapper,1 gray snapper, and 1 triggerfish:

Our Bay Day Sunday- 2 red snapper, 3 flounder, 1 sheepshead, and Ultralite's FIRST BAY GAG GROUPER!!!:clap

A phenomenon I have only seen once, in Baja, but once you see you do not forget. Atmospheric conditions have to be just right at sunset and you will see a bright green "flash" of light as the sun sinks its last... it reeeally looked like we'd see it Saturday too!
