Default Choppedliver and Pops First Outing Thursday 4/16

Me and Dad went fishing for the first time together since I was a kid ( 30 years ago ) .

Weve been tinkering with an old bass boat I got from my uncle for cheap. Got it working pretty good and headed out to 3 mile bridge Thursday while the water was nice and flat. Didnt know where to go , didnt care, just happy to be on the water with pops fishing for the first time in a long time.Pulled up to a piling and dropped to bottom using shrimp. Havent been able to catch anything on gulps yet.

In the first few minutes Dad caught a baby red snapper and released it. Then he caught a nice size pin fish. And something else wasnt sure about ( released ). And a white trout.

Wasnt too long before I hooked up with a 13inch Sheephead. Then an eel, then a white trout.

We were out there for just a couple hours, and then the chop started picking up and we felt uncomfortable in the little bass boat and headed back to shore. It was a blast though, making some lasting memories with Dad. Was definitely a good day.

Went home with 3 keepers. A sheephead and two white trout.

By the way are these eels common around here? Are they good for bait or anything else? Eating? Dangerous? Sucker was hard to unhook and he kept wrapping his body around my arm like a boa constrictor. Sucker was strong as hell and kinda creepy lol

thanks for the report and good for you on taking dad fishing...

suggestion: that 2 drop surf rig in the 2nd pic works but, i'd go with a carolina using about 12"-18" flouro leader...

Thanks for the tip. Do you make your own? Or do you use premade ones. I just picked these up on the way at walmart, just wanted to get in the water and fishing asap.

Yeah, make your own. Those cheapos from walmart have all kinds of metal and cheap beads and crap that you don't really want. Use a carolina rig(egg weight, swivel to main line, florocarbon leader, hook) or make your own two drop rig similar to what you're using there by taking a length of florocarbon leader material, put two dropper loops in it about 6 inches apart and tie your weight on the bottom and swivel to main line...connect your hooks to the dropper loops. Here's a link to the dropper loop knot: http://www.leadertec.com/tipsandtech...pper_loop.html

I like the two drop because Ive got twice the bait in the water obviously. So if you were making your own two drop setup, you would just use a weight and a swivel? No beads? I always wondered what the hell is the purpose of the beads. Are the fish going "ohhhh pretty beads...I wanna eat that". I mean seriously, are the fish attracted to the beads ? Or is it the smell bait? Obviously the bait is what they want to eat, dont understand the beads. It seems like you would want to make it look as natural as possible and beads dont grow in the ocean.

those beads, i guess, are meant to simulate the egg sacks of sand fleas....i think. either way when i make mine i dont use them. i make all of my leaders out of flourocarbon and keep all tackle as small as possible.
