Default Boneheaded Mistake

Well,

We are in the process of moving. Found a great place in Hidden Creek. Anyway, My better half gave me the morning off from moving so I decided to make a quick solo trip and try and bend a pole or two!! Started out innocent enough...scouting some areas for redfish and trying to locate a few Flounder.

While fishing a well known area I saw a large dark shadow in about 14" of water coming right for me. Not 100% sure what I was looking at I put a 4" Gulp! shrimp on a larger jighead and waited on the USO (unidentified swimming object). When it got about 20 yards from the boat I figured out what it was. It was a COBIA!!!!! Probably in the 20-25lb range. But more than likley well over the 33" limit. So I pitched the shrimp to him once or twice....He didn't seem interested he was swimming around my boat very irratically very excited and obviously in feeding mode. On a fifth pass I threw the shrimp way past him and ripped it right in front of his face. That did the trick. He fired up so quick and turned on the lure that I barely had time to react.

First thing that went through my mind was firing the motor off to give chase. I had just hooked a decent cobia on a 6' 6" med/lite rod with 10lb braid and a 15# flourocarbon leader.:doh

Well........ While the fish proceeded to dump my Shimano Symetre 2500 of all the braid I had..... I made the big mistake. While overly concerned with getting my boat moving I gave the damn fish slack..one big head shake and a slight tail walk now in about 2 ft of water the fish shook the lure!!!!!:doh:doh:doh:doh:doh:doh

I spent about an hour trying to locate him but no luck:hoppingmad...

Did manage a slam a few hours later but nothing made me feel better about losing that dang fish. Anyway, just figured I would share my boneheaded move with the rest of you.. Feel free to clown me now and tell me how stupid I was....LOL

Gee in the middle of all of that couldn't you stop and snap a few pics!

Sounds like a fun rush, that's when you need that remote control trolling motor with the Jack Rabbit Button.

Thanksfor sharing!

Regardless of the mistake, that is pretty cool. My buddy caught one in the sound a week ago.

That crossed my mind shortly after BP....I should have chased with the trolling motor. It was in the water and ready!!!!! But it was an epic mistake:banghead LOL... For some dang reason I was so set and determined on chasing with the main.. I have no idea why. LOL

It was sooooo exciting. It's weird to get cobia fever in August. It's like getting buck fever in June!!!!!! I wish I would've landed it. But the experience was so AWESOME I am in no way bummed out

Sometimes the "One that got away" is more memorable than the ones that didn't.
