Default 2nd chance king mackeral

I took a group of 4 anglers out for a 5 hour trolling trip on their 30' wellcraft friday morning despite some ominous looking clouds. It got a little snotty but all in all wasn't too bad and the kings were biting just outside the pass. After already putting a few small kings in the boat, I decided to add a small lure to the spread in tight to the transom for spanish. I grabbed a medium spinning rod that had 15lb. line on it and put a small rapala about 40ft. back. Within 2 minutes it doubled over and was screaming. Than I heard the pop; we got spooled! About a hour later and about a mile west, we got a good hit and started bringing it in. As it came in I noticed the lure coming out of the water about 50ft. behind the transom with no fish on it but it was still somehow pulling line and fighting. As it got closer I noticed a line hanging off the back of it and in disbelief also noticed the green color and size of the line. Realizing it was the line from the reel that had got spooled, I reached out as soon as it was within reach and started to pull it in. Sure enough the fish was still on and after a couple of minutes I had the fish and my lost lure in the boat! The king was only about 10lbs. but was hooked in the belly which gave it enough pull to spool the little spin rod. I doubt I'll ever have that happen again!
