Default Where to travel to for tarpon?

I'm planning to take a weekend off from work In July and I want to load up my kayak and travel somewhere for tarpon. I'm thinking somewhere around the port st joe area but idk. I've never tarpon fished before so I'm clueless as to where to start. Would like to keep my drive within 5 hours of Pensacola.

So..for anyone that wouldn't mind giving me some tips and point me in the right direction, I'm all ears. It is greatly appreciated!

I had some friends go to Key West last summer and they said they saw tarpon in large numbers while heading offshore. They went out another time and caught 5

I am aware of this and intend on trying to catch one off our beach again this year. I spent a solid week after them in July last year and saw tons of them but never got bit. However, I still want to get out of town for a weekend and target them somewhere that they feed more consistently

Keys...

Really no point to go elsewhere if you want to target Tarpon.

5 hours you are still in upper fla. you need to get south for the hotter Tarpon fishing. Tampa bay area has them. Or I can give you some numbers that I see charter boats tarpon fishing in Key west every day I am lobster diving. They always have one hooked up and it's a stones throw off shore. If you are Navy or have someone Military with you it's really close to shore plus you can pitch a tent in there campgrounds and save a ton of $$$.

Lots of them there. The current can get quite dicey , but it is not too far across to slew your way around. A little south and a half mile along St. Vincents... You have to catch some catfish and sharks before you are allowed to hook a tarpon...
Or Try Mud Cove off of Alligator point.... Big ones there !

Clearwater is about the nearest northern beach area with numerous pass areas to IC waterways. I've caught plenty between Clearwater to Sarasota. Best area for me was around Egmont Key just outside the Skyway bridge off Ft. Desoto State Park. It's a 6.5 hr drive to there from Pcola.
