Default what leader to protect against bluefish line cuts

I dont like using steel leaders. If I switch to 40lb fluorocarbon will that not cut through?

Depends on the size of the bluefish, but it will help. I accidentally catch a decent amount of blues in the surf and I use 15-40lb leaders, depending on what I am fishing for...

Days like today, when the water is so calm with a north wind and clear. Bluefish cuts will happen. If you go to heavy to prevent it, you won't get hook ups. I went with 20 today and didn't get cut off but had to keep retieing. 20 is the lightest I would go

40# FC unless it is really bad, then I switch to a 1' long 20# wire leader.

I can sometimes get by with about 6inches of 40-60lbs fluoro. It hurts the action of the lure but it usually keeps me getting bites compared to steel leader. However, it's good to bring a variety with you just in case. Some days, conditions are different from others and fish behavior can change day-to-day as well.

Good luck!
