Default What kind of bait

Is catching live pin fish and Menhedan (shiner to me) and drifting with them on a free line the best way to produce fish? I grew up in south texas we use to drift with cut mullet on bottom, but I heard here that cut bait will only produce catfish around here. Can anyone give truth to this. Will shrimp do any good. I plan to rent a boat out of sherman cove soon, and would love the help. Thanks

Default bait

I would definitely avoid the cut bait if you have access to live bait. Cut bait around here will definitely produce catfish, along with an occasional red. Drifting with live bait is one productive method, but anchoring over a strategic spot with live bait can be even better.

I'd only use cutbait if I was fishing for black snapper around bridges other than that you rite, you'll catch a bunch of trash fish and have pinfish pecking at your bait all the time. I wouldn't anchor up anywhere if your fishing the flats though. Trout, redfish, and flounder are all ambush preditors, meaning they sit and wait for a bait to be brought to them. Drifting allows you to cover a far greater area and is far more productive. Unless your fishing over a stucture or under a bridge I wouldn"t ever anchor up.

That is a very vague question. What fish are you targeting, on what structure, etc?

Cut bait will produce with Bull Reds and small shark in the pass and just outside. Catfish too.
