I'm thinking of wade fishing the grass flats in the bay east of Portofino. Has anyone done this and/or have advice/suggestions to pass along? Open to any guidance but also interested in particular in any lure suggestions. Thanks.

The sound has some nice grass flats. Look for mullet activity and start fishing. Topwater walking bait (Zara puppy, Bonney Jackall) early morning or late day, anywhere wind or tide pushes current past a current break - a point, a piece of structure, a shallow spot, any good ambush spot - is a better than average place. Have your bait moving the same direction as the water or the bait is moving. After that try a paddle tail swimbait or spoon, swim slowly along and let drop briefly into the 'potholes' (the darker spots) and swim it back out. If there is loose grass go with a weedless setup. I like the Owner belly-weighted hooks with the corkscrew bait keeper and a Yum Money Minnow or Matrix Shad in pearl or ultraviolet. Shallow jerk baits like Xrap XR8 can be good. Generally more natural looking colors for clearer water are my favorites. Lot of people like a live or DOA (artificial) shrimp on an 18" flouro leader under a popping cork - twitch, twitch, soak... repeat...- If you can net some finger mullet those will be super on a popping cork or Carolina rig as well.
