Default Type of line and leader for fishing Ono Island docks?

Any suggestions on what pound test to use for the fishing line when fishing the Ono Island docks at night for trout? Do you use a leader?

Thanks!

Last several years when I get down there I use 15# braid w/ 12-15" of 20# floro. I free line a live shrimp or greenback. Sometimes use a cork or artificial. All depends on what they want that night! Picky little boogers.

You can typically use the same thing for your general inshore fishing during the day. Either 10-12lbs mono tied straight to the lure/hook or if you use braid, then a short fluoro leader as Mac describes above.

That's where I'd start, they'll let you know real quick if they're hungry. Have a lighter rig with you just in case they're finicky. 6-8lbs mono straight to the lure or 8-15lbs braid to 12lbs fluoro if they don't want to bite.

Good luck!

Had a guide convince me to tie a much longer leader (about 8' of flourocarbon) onto my braid. I noticed with live shrimp, mirrolures and plastics on jigheads that my strikes went up dramatically with the longer leader. I use a double uni knot to tie them together and the knot is small enough to travel through my guides freely. My standard setup on my lightweights is 15-20lb braid and 12-15lb flour.

Guide also convinced me to eliminate the split rings when tieing on my terminal tackle and instead using a tarpon loop.

I would have never believed it, but I can now tie on leader and terminal tackle in no time, even in the dark.

A lot of my fishing is in pretty clear water in and around the Magnolia river.

15# braid and either 15 or 20# fluoro. I agree with the longer leaders, if for no other reason than having enough on to re-tie several times.
