Default Tarpon Fishing

I want to catch a tarpon but I don't know how. Ive done it in Tampa bay with a guide but never on my own boat. Id like to know some good spots where I can take a skiff , what lure/bait to use, troll or chum, any info would be very useful.

Thanks!

Use what you used with your guide, read up on them a little and do a search on this site to see what wealth of information may be right at your finger tips.

I haven't heard of many in the sound and I'm not sure how you'd like taking a skiff in the gulf. Of course I'm sure some cowboys will chime in

I know there's an occasional tarpon up this way, but not many...i believe they are a more frequent south of here...so if you catch one it will be by accident. ..

This where I saw a few tarpon, sometime ago, three to be exact:
(1) cruising from east to west at Big Sabine point, from what I could see it was alone and on the move...I was wade fishing.
(2) Hooked up at the Oak. pier...
(3) Saw one jumped right at the outside mouth of Pensacola Bay by a fisherman throwing a large red/white Rappala lipped plug from the beach.

Those are all I've seen, some time ago I might add, I imagine there are a slug more that cruise that last area every year. Some of the fisherman here can probably provide a little more info, but they also respect and help anglers that are trying to help themselves. By reading up on them, you might learn which baits they favor, and the depth of water they usually travel. You got all I got and that's not much. I wouldn't mind dancing with one of those myself.

There are plenty of tarpon around, if the water is in good shape you can cruise outside of the second sandbar off of the beach and sight cast for them, go spend a day on the pier and learn what to look for. You can also catch them in the bay with live bait at first light, just outside of Bayou Texar is a good starting place. Good luck.
