Default sick fish

We caught a 26" redfish today that had a mirrolure in its mouth with the bottom treble hook guthooked...looked like it had been in there for atleast a week or two, maybe longer. When I filetedthe fish the meat was pale white and very limp, looked awful compared to our other filets. Has anyone had a similar experience witha fish...I'm curious ifthe fish was sickly solely b/c of the lure being guthooked.

We caught one years ago in West Bay with a top dog plugging up his throut. It had been there long enough to wear a raw spot on the roof of his mouth, he barely fought at all, and he was real emaciated. Noticable difference between his filets and those from a healthy one. Did not eat it.

when a fish can't eat for whatever reason in this case a lure in his gut his body resorts to body fat as a source of food and the meat as a result gets emaciated and is tasteless. Flounder when spanning in the end of the season get that way and aren't that good to eat. The red fish would most likely have died as a result where the flounder just start eating again after spawning and recover.

I have caught and cleaned fish that were stuck in a trap for a while and when we cleaned them the meat looked almost like it had already been cooked, like you said white not clear so we threw it back in the crab trap for bait.

I lost a lure JUST LIKE that a couple of weeks ago. It was probably due to a poorly tied knot...

If I send you my address, will you return my lure?????

I'll pay your postage and set up up w/ a Natty Light for a finders fee!!

Salmon become more and more emaciated as they make their return trip upstream. Ever notice how a bear will eat the eggs and skin of a salmon he catches but leave the rest? There's fat in the skin and eggs, little nourishment in the rest (and the fish are bountiful and easy to catch as they die. Most salmon stop eating once they reach fresh water. There meat is thin and mushy. The worse the salmon transforms into that hook jawed monster the less meat on his bones.

Your red fishwas starving to death...
