Default Proper use of circle hooks

I apparently still don't understand how to use circle hooks. I was getting lots of bites today, but I either wasn't hooking the bait right, or wasn't setting the hook right.
I baited the cigar minnow by running the hook thru the eyes around the body and hooked the minnow thru the back about 2/3 of the way down toward the tail.
When I got a bite, I just started reeling. I probably caught 5 fish and missed dozens of strikes.
Any suggestions?

Make sure that you aren't blocking the hook from getting a "bite" in the mouth of the fish. It sounds like you may be blocking the gap in between the point of the hook and the shank of the hook with bait. I usually just hook a bait once and ensure that the gap is clear so that the hook gets a good dig.

It is so easy Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder can do it. Hook the Cig, dead or alive from the bottom of the mouth out the top and make sure the hook is exposed well. When you rod loads up, not just taps, just reel down and keep on keepin on. Do not yank just crank.

The hook point has to be showing or you'll pull the bait out of the fish's mouth without hooking up. I try to go from bottom to top lip but if the bite is light they'll yank the bait off the hook, so I'll hook them just behind the head on the body. If using dead bait just hook through the eyes. Just go through the bait once if using live bait tho or it'll die faster. Circle hooks are not a guarantee you still miss plenty of fish. Just be patient.

Sage advice.
