Default Making a trip to Pensacola

Hello all,

I am making a trip to see a buddy of mine that's in training at NAS and we are going to rent a boat on base to try and get on some fish. We were stationed together at Camp Lejeune, NC and did a lot of fishing for reds, specks, flounder up there. I've been reading through the different sections of inshore fishing and was wondering if I could get a little information. When you guys speak of the "pass" is that where Fort Pickens meets Fort MCree going into the gulf? We are going to do our best to target some redfish and I was wondering what most of you use for bait and the areas that are best this time of year. I keep seeing the "flats" referenced but I have no clue where that is. Up in NC we normally just fish the inlet of the intracoastal to the Atlantic, but it seems a lot different down there. Any tips on how/where to fish this time of year for any species would be much appreciated!

Thanks everyone

I figured, thank you for confirming it. So when I see the "flats" is that a particular flat or just big flats in general? I also saw that 3 mile seems to be a good place for the reds.

Big areas where the water is shallow, mostly along the ICW, Big Lagoon, Santa Rosa Sound, and so on

Look at google maps... the flats are pretty distinct. There are a dozen or so flats near NAS. Just look near the shoreline for darker patches

Yeah I've been doing a map study all day. I saw people referencing "the flats" and thought it might be a particular set. Do reds normally get caught on shrimp and fleas down there? Or is live mullet best?

No, you gotta do your own field testing to figure out which flats are best. Mullet, shrimp and gold spoons are good for Reds. Mirrolure suspended twitch baits work well as well as top water in the am. MR17 is a proven killer.
