Red face Last dumb question for awhile.

Simple question. I've never used braid but that seems to be the norm for inshore/nearshore down there. I'll be spooling a 4000 size Cabelas salt striker on a 9' m ugly stick for kayak fishing past the surf and from the beach, a 3000 PennSargus mouted on a 7' ugly stick pro light graphite M for bay fishing. and a Daiwa 100a (Giant reel) mounted on an 8' ugly stick MH for medium sharks.

So what braid or other lines would you put on these?

Probably 20lb braid on the 4000, and 10 or maybe 15lb on the 3000. I'm not sure about the big diawa, but I'm guessing 30lb braid. Line capacity is your friend when doing that style of fishing, so try to pick up the 300yd spools vs the 150yd braid spools. Or find a tackle shop with bulk spools of braid, and have them spool you up with only a small layer of mono backing on the bottom.

Is it cost effective to have a shop spool you up? I was pretty close with you for size. What about brands? The daiwa holds over 400 yards of 20lb mono. Walmart her has 125 yards of 65lb spider wire on clearance for $9. I thought about putting a roll of that on the bottom of the daiwa then filling it with 20lb mono. Crazy?
Sure wish I had a Paypal account, that battle was tempting. Wish I could handle saltwater stuff without buying it first.

You need to put mono under the braid not on top because if applied directly to most spools braid will slip.

For sure. If you don't you will have a mess first fish you hook up. I would probably go the tackle shop route on the big one unless you can find a deal on a 500 yd spool of braid. I would go bigger than 30lb on it. It will take a lot that size to fill it...

You end up coming out a little better by getting it spooled by a tackle shop vs buying boxes. Since the Diawa spool is that big, just fill it up probably half way or a little more with mono, and then braid to top it off.

reason people are using braid is that it has less stretch and you feel the bite better. if you use a lot of mono you lose that advantage

What should it cost to have a rod spooled?
