Default half bites

At the mouth of the gulf and even this weekend in Grand Lagoon, I get a bite that takes just the back half of my bait fish (croaker), leaving the head (and hook) behind. What is doing this?

Could be bluefish. I live on the ICW just past Big Lagoon and we catch them off the dock all the time. What you describe is pretty much what they do at my place.

I'm with OTR, sounds a LOT like bluefish.
You can tell by the shape of the bite.
Bluefish have a curved mouth FULL of razor sharp teeth!

and often eat the tail of a baitfish first, leaving a characteristic 'half moon' shaped bite mark

Does that describe it?
