Default Fish ID

We were in Pensacola today and stopped by what used to be Bayfront Auditorium. I think it's called Palafox Pier now. We walked out on the South side where the boats are docked. There was a very large fish swimming around where the oysters are on the pilings. At first I thought it was a red or black drum, but after doing a google search, it may have been a giant catfish. It had a wide head, and without exaggerating at all, he was a minimum of 4 feet long. Do catfish in the bay get that big ?. What else could it have been ?.Thanks for any info.

Cobia are pretty much giant catfish... that people actually like to catch.

Did you notice if it was brown?

He was not brown. (good question ) I think I saw a black drum. I have asked lots of folks who know the specific area, and from what they described with the color, shape and fins, I am pretty convinced it was a black drum. I googled an image at first, and did not realize they lose the stripes as they grow. Thank you for your information.
