Default Crabbing on vacation

My family and I want to do some crabbing on the Santa Rosa Sound while we're on vacation at Pensacola Beach. There's no dock at the townhouse we rented and we won't have a boat. Can you catch a fair amount of crab from the shore? I've heard about swimming out a ways and dropping a crab pot with a buoy on it. Has anyone tried that? Or should I just go to a public pier and try from there?

I use a dip net and snorkel out a bit and cruise above the grass and when I see one, just swim down and scoop him up. I just bring a small cage or something similar to put them in till I get back to shore. we can usually round up enough for supper in about an hour.
