Default Choctawhatchee and all this rain.

Just putting my recent experiences and posing a few questions regarding all this rain.

I usually kayak fish or shore/wade fish along the north side of the choctawhatchee west of the mid-bay bridge with mixed success. Surprisingly the last couple times I went out the water was not muddy, just stained even after all this rain. Typically I can wade out with my cast net and have dozens of pinfish, croaker, sometimes shad and lately mullet in 5-10 minutes. However, the last time two times I went I didn't net a single fish of any kind in that time period. Given that, I decided if there was no bait, then there probably weren't any trout or reds and packed up and left for a new spot instead of trying artificials. Is that an accurate assumption to make?

I have also noticed that as of the last week I can catch an unusually large amount of those same bait fish back in the stream-fed bayous. I don't understand this because those waters are extremely stained (like looking at a big coca-cola bayou) and I figure much lower salinity than the bay. All this bait is there but I am lucky to catch a single red or speck in hours of fishing in these bayous, with live finger mullet nonetheless.

I do note the tides, but more so tend to go out regardless of the tide when work and family time allows. To me, it seems like the big fish are probably still in the flats (since I'm not getting any bites in the bayou) along the bay, but the bait is moving back into the bayous without them. Should I pick up bait in the bayou and then head out to the bay?

Or maybe I'm just over-analyzing my terrible fishing. Ha!

Been out in the Bay 4 times in past couple weeks, both in a boat and kayak. Have fished bayous, flats, all the way from Rocky Bayou to Eglin Flats to White Point (Grass Lake, Pippen Lake) and not caught squat. I don't know what the deal is.
Was out last night at White Point, never saw a single fish, no mullet jumping, not even a pinfish nibble. My only guess is maybe to hot in the day/evening and that at sunrise would be the best time.

Decided I would take a change of clothes to work so I could head out to try again on the bay. After getting weird fish (oyster fish!?) and getting skunked in the bay and bayous for the last couple weeks the perseverance paid off. Spent 20 mins trying to net bait and finally hit a school of pinfish. It was too windy to kayak fish for me so I pulled out the chair and soaked a couple lines, alternating between live and cut bait. Only had one bite in two hours, and it was a nice slot red. With dinner in hand packed up and called it a day. Good news is those pesky hard heads are nowhere to be found, but it does get boring sitting there with no other bites for that long.
