Default Catching Sheepies in the Pass Question

I noticed this past weekend that many people were catching sheepies around the buoy in the pass. My questions is how far down do you go to catch the sheepies in the pass? Sheepies aren't bottom eaters right?

Thanks for any input.

Drop your rig all the way to the bottom and keep it there. You won't get a single bite iff your not on the bottom. Yes, sheepies do eat off the bottom.

Here is a picture of a typical Sheepshead rig

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; COLOR: #1f5080; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">To answer your question, yes and no on whether they are bottom feeders. They feed near the bottom on many different types of things, but they also feed near the top on bridge pilings, dock poles and rock jetties near the top. They eat crabs, shrimp, oysters, barnacles, sea worms, and a few other things. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o><P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; COLOR: #1f5080; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana"><o></o><P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; COLOR: #1f5080; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">I have noticed this year when a few of the sheepshead came up they pooped out grass. I think when they are eating the barnacles off the rocks they are getting a little grass in the diet. <o></o><P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; COLOR: #1f5080; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">
The place in the pass you see people catching them is called the pipe or the rock ledges. It's in 60ft of water and a few other places are in 40 ft of water. When you see people drifting this area in a line of sorts, go to the beginning of the line. This depends upon what the current is on where you start.<o></o><P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; COLOR: #1f5080; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">
Take a look at the picture above and use it for sheepshead. When you pick out your hook go with a # 1 or 1/0 - J hook. Some guys like a circle hook; it depends upon your fishing style. With the egg weight, you might have to use a 1 oz ? 3 oz, depending on the strength of the current.
Hope this helps. The sheepshead should be around for another week or so, and then they will be gone.<o></o><P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; COLOR: #1f5080; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">Tight Lines.<o></o>
