Default Barracuda

Has anyone targeted Barracuda? I would like to use my kayak and go after them and have read that they sometimes go into the shallow bays and flats in the winter time.

You can get on the smaller species of cudas in decent numbers. We have both Southern Sennet and Guaguanche in the coastal bays and usually they can be found in decent numbers from April through early November. After that they become pretty scarce. I've actually been able to target them on the second bar in the spring using small spoons and by live baiting small finger mullet. They are fun to catch and great eating.

Occasionally you will get Great Barracuda inshore but I've never known anyone to have consistent catches of them in the Northern Gulf. Offshore they are plentiful, but inshore is usually an incidental catch.

Thanks for the info! a few years back i got one on a speer fishing trip and it was delicious and since its in the Northern gulf less chances of ciguatera poisoning. Would be nice to be able to get to them without having to pay for a charter.

The fishery that you're thinking of occurs in the Keys, along with the rest of the Caribbean during the cooler months. Too cold up here. I agree, the do taste great, but I don't bother with eating them anymore.
